Indian Overseas Bank Cant Recruit for Few years | More Banks May Stop Recruitments!

Public sector banks in india are under severe stress as their non performing assets (NPA) are seen increasing manifold leading to huge losses.A sector known to create thousands of new jobs every year is facing a huge crisis thereby pushing RBI (Reserve bank of India) to take stock of the situation. To contain growing losses, the central bank has taken prompt correction action (PCA) ordering Indian Overseas Bank to stop new recruitments.

IBPS (Institute of Banking Personnel Selection) is the organization that conducts  recruitments for 20 govt owned banks in India.Anyone who wishes to join a public bank should qualify in these IBPS exams & interviews.

Last year, approximately 41,000 bank jobs were announced for qualifiers of IBPS bank exams held for officer (PO), clerk & specialist officer positions.

But, there were 0 vacancies in Indian Overseas Bank for 2016-17.

Why IOB did not Recruit Last Year?

The Chennai based Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) is one of the nation`s oldest public indian-overseas-bank-jobssector bank but their gross NPAs rose to Rs. 30,049 crore during the past five years.

It means nearly 17.40% are bad loans of their overall advances.

This situation reflected in its 3rd quarters results with the bank declaring a humongous Rs.1425 crore loss.

Since IOB was way ahead of permissible limits set on NPAs, PCA was imposed on them.

What is Prompt Corrective Action (PCA)?

Reserve Bank of India normally initiates ‘prompt corrective action’ on a bank when bad loans cross 10% mark, capital adequacy ratio slips below 9% & return on assets falls below 0.25 per cent.

RBI would place the following restrictions on the bank as part of PCA:

  • Cannot recruit new employees
  • Curtail branch expansion
  • Should not enter any new business
  • Improve internal controls
  • Consolidate business activities
  • Increase recovery of bad loans

Since the guidelines does not allow hiring new people, Indian overseas bank did not declare any vacancies for IBPS exam 2015 qualifiers.

Will IOB Conduct Recruitments in Future?

The corrective action is taken on account of bank`s surging NPA & poor performance. So the directions of PCA will continue until IOB returns to profitability.

Indian overseas bank has a long road ahead to trim its NPAs because recovering such large amount of bad loans is not an easy task. Therefore, no definite timeline was committed by the management.

It might take atleast 2 years or even more to see IOB start notifying new vacancies again.

In 2014, the RBI initiated a prompt corrective action against United Bank of India which was lifted in March 2015 after the bank brought down their NPAs.

4 more Banks Could Face RBI Action

As mentioned earlier, all public sector banks are bleeding losses for the past few quarters. Their biggest worry is rising NPA & slow recovery process which could trigger RBI`s PCA if left uncontained.

The gross NPA of all public banks stands at a whooping Rs.5,90,772 crore, a 67% increase compared to previous year.

govt-banks-bad-loans-npa

Atleast 4 banks are in a dangerous position as per reports, owing to their higher than allowed NPA ratios. They are:

  • UCO Bank
  • United Bank of India
  • Bank of India
  • Punjab National Bank

As of now, there is no action imposed on these banks. But RBI in its next review may impose PCA order on these banks if their performance worsens.

In such a case, banks should stop recruitments altogether until they bounce back.It will also lead to decrease in overall number of bank jobs filled through IBPS exams.

It was announced recently that SBI associate banks wont recruit after its merger with State Bank of India & Bharatiya mahila bank. This could probably be the reason for  favor bank mergers.

The next few years are crucial, for govt banks & even for bank job aspirants!

SBI Clerk Mains 2016: Exam Review & Expected Cutoffs [Detailed Analysis]

The SBI clerk mains exam was held recently for the recruitment of junior associates & agricultural junior associates in state bank of india. But the SBI clerk main exam reviews of candidates seems to paint a different picture than what was expected. Most of them who had easily cleared the prelims test felt the main examination as too tough.Based on their feedback, here is the complete review of SBI clerk mains exam 2016.

Who wouldnt want to be part of India`s largest public sector bank? That was the reason behind the massive response for SBI recruitment to fill 17000 clerical jobs.

Following the release of SBI clerk prelims results, candidates had to appear for the main examinations on June 25 & 26th.The sbi clerical mains was the important test to qualify as these marks would only be considered for final selection.

SBI Clerk Mains – Tough & Tricky Exam

In a clear shift of things, SBI clerk mains was not the exam it used to be few years ago. They have incorporated many new changes, right from pattern to question difficulty.

The general overview of clerical mains as shared by candidates is:

sbi-clerk-mains-exam-pattern

With a new system of time limit being introduced for each section, candidates need to complete answering a particular test within the specific duration.

The order of online test was fixed and all candidates should take questions only in the following order:

  1. General awareness (35 mins),
  2. English language (35 min),
  3. Reasoning ability & Computer aptitude (45 mins) and
  4. Quantitative aptitude (45 mins)

Since this was the first time, some candidates grew nervous thinking about the time limit.Because they cannot move to another section midway, individuals found it tough to manage time.

General/ Financial Awareness: Though the questions were not too tough, it was not easy as well.Inaddition to banking & economy related questions, there were also traditional/ static GK such as parks, headquarters, lakes, rivers etc.,

Anyone who studied these topics wouldnt find this section as tough to answer. But a majority of candidates were worried about their performance in general awareness.

Safe attempts: Answering 32+ questions correctly gives a best chance to qualify in this part.

English Language: Nothing much to discuss here as the questions were similar to that of prelims.Reading comprehension, Cloze tests, Parajumbles, Sentence correction etc were the topics asked.

Safe attempts to qualify: 30+ correct answers

Reasoning & Computer aptitude: Here came the twist. There was a hope of getting atleast 20 computer awareness questions along with reasoning questions.

But it had only aptitude problems to solve involving binary digits & symbolic representations. It was a major disappointment for candidates who expected some basic questions on computers, which are easy to answer.

Coming to reasoning problems, the difficulty level was between easy to moderate. Some topics are:

  • Puzzles
  • Input/ Output
  • Data sufficiency
  • Arrangements
  • Inequalities

Few questions were tricky & involved lot of calculations pushing up the time spent on this particular section.

Safe attempts to qualify: 30+ answers with good accuracy

Quantitative Aptitude: This was quite difficult for many especially for those who started appearing for bank exams recently.

The inability to recognize the concept was the biggest problem because only few questions were direct. All others required understanding of concepts first.

  • Number series
  • Data interpretation
  • Quadratic equations
  • Simple/ Compund interest
  • Data sufficiency
  • Time & work/distance
  • Simplifcations
  • Trigonometry

With just 45 minutes limit, few candidates found it hard to answer after their poor show in the remaining sections.

Safe attempts to qualify: 25+ with 100% accuracy should be good enough to qualify

SBI Clerk Mains Expected Cutoffs

When SBI clerk prelims cutoffs were released, it was very surprising to see single digit marks as sectional cutoffs.

We had mentioned that prelims cutoffs could be in the range of 55 – 62 but in Delhi & Punjab, it even reached 66.On the other hand, candidates of Tamilnadu, Telengana, Andhra pradesh were even more shocked to see very low total cutoffs for their states.

So its not clear on what basis SBI is calculating the cutoff scores. But with whatever feedback we received from candidates, here are the SBI clerk mains expected cutoffs:

  • General awareness: 12 - 16
  • English: 10 - 15
  • Reasoning: 8 - 14
  • Quantitative aptitude: 7 – 13

There are seperate state-wise cutoffs on the total scores as well which will differ for junior associate & junior agricultural associate.

  • General: 90 – 110
  • OBC: 85 – 100
  • SC: 80- 90
  • ST: 60 – 75

What is your SBI clerk mains experience? Share your attempts in comments along with the state to discuss.

41000 Bank Jobs Created in 2016 | Post-Wise Vacancies List Here

number of bank jobs in 2016,bank exams 2016,how many bank jobs in 2016,how many bank jobs were filled in 2016,number of bank job vacancies in 2016The selection process for 41000 govt bank jobs concluded recently with IBPS completing allotments for successful candidates. For the past couple of years, Indian banking sector emerged as one of the leading job creators compared to other sectors. This has led many fresh graduates to appear for banking exams regularly. The answer on how many bank vacancies were created last year here.

To compensate for the large no. of retirements happening in middle/ senior cadre, public sector banks are recruiting aggressively.

This trend continued in the year 2015-16 as well with approximately 40,000 vacancies being created across various positions in govt owned banks.

First, How do these Banks Recruit?

A common selection process for jobs in 20 government banks is held by IBPS (Institute of Banking Personnel Selection). They are responsible for conducting common written exams & interview for different positions.

Candidates who qualify finally with the necessary cutoffs are allotted to banks based on their scores.

In this method, merit places an important role.

A top scoring person gets a job in the bank he/ she chose as their 1st preference. The least scoring candidate in merit list is allotted as per their 5th or 6th or even last preference.

    Bank Recruitments 2015 -16

Every year, the IBPS bank exams are held during the second part of that calendar year.So the following data are for recruitment exams conducted in the year 2015-16.

3 major banking exams were held in 2015.They are for the following entry level posts:

    • Clerk
    • Probationary Officer  (PO)
    • Specialist Officer (SO)

IBPS V means, the 5th year of this exam, that were conducted on different dates in 2015-16.

how many bank jobs in 2015-16,IBPS bank vacancies in 2016

As you can see, a total of 41,597 bank jobs were created by govt. banks.

These openings will be filled in the current year of 2016 with qualified candidates of IBPS bank exams held in 2015-16.

    Bank Jobs: Competition is Growing

Although vacancies are only in few thousands the response for these exams were much higher. Here are some statistics:

    • 12 – 14 lakh candidates register for IBPS PO & Clerk common exams every year
    • 9 - 10 lakh of them appear for the test

State Bank of India does not participate in this common recruitment procedure. They issue separate recruitment notifications & select candidates based on that scores.

So whenever an SBI recruitment notification is released, atleast 20 lakh candidates apply due to the huge brand value of SBI.There will be no SBI associate banks recruitment hereafter as they will soon merge with SBI.

Such figures only showcase the growing interest for government jobs (such as banks, SSC, PSC etc) among Indian youth.

Are there bank exams in 2016?

Yes.If you are waiting to start your career in indian banks or is looking to quit your present job, planning early is necessary.

The IBPS bank exams in 2016 for PO, clerks & specialist officers shall happen only after October.
