There was a time when banks would take nearly six months and longer to complete their recruitments. But with advancement in testing technologies, the duration has been shortened. The IBPS Specialist Officer exam 2013 results announced recently is an example of this change.
Bank jobs are normally known to constitute of probationary officer (PO) & clerks but specialist officers also form part of this community. While fresh graduates from any stream are eligible to apply for other positions, candidates with specialized qualifications such as BE/ Btech/ MCA etc are only invited to apply for specialist cadre.
In addition to common written examinations for PO & clerk posts Institute of Banking Personnel Selection conducts similar test for specialist officer aspirants as well.
SO Exam Results – 15000 May Have Passed
The IBPS Specialist Officer common exam was held in March 2013 for various specialized positions in scale I & II cadre.
Since the test was computer based (online) result status were made available last week & now scores are also being displayed at their website here [login using your roll no. and password/ birth date]
The number of qualifiers in each specialty is not known as IBPS has not declared it yet.
While we are trying to get in touch with the officials for a much clearer picture, approx.15000 candidates might have cleared the 2013 SO exam it is expected as the previous exam had 16000 passouts only.
What Next?
IBPS had introduced common interviews for PO & clerks earlier this year. The same are to be implemented for specialist officers recruitment 2013 as well.

Less No. of Vacancies
PO & clerical cadre employees occupy a major chunk of new recruits in any bank compared to specialist officers. The common reasons are:
- Since most of these selected would be posted only in head/ regional/ zonal offices, PSB`s appoint 1 or 2 in departments which require their expertise.
- Therefore the number of vacancies advertised by each bank is also very limited as some banks may not even require a specialized person for that dept.
With RBI pushing public sector banks to reach more villages the need for Agriculture officers has increased.
| Looking at some of the hiring activities last year, Agri officers were required in large numbers. The second slot was occupied by IT officers. Those who opted for Marketing/ Technical & HR did not have ample opportunities to apply. |
Will the situation change for qualifiers of 2013 specialist officers exam? While we wait to know about it, do share your scores to know where you stand.

Punjab National Bank has come out with an advertisement for recruitment of specialist officers which will make PG degree holders to sit up and listen. It has been a while since public sector banks announced specialist officer vacancies & many CWE passouts were discontent over the time taken.
